乐文翻译挖掘严复翻译思想的现代价值

作为中国近代启蒙思想家、翻译家,严复研究一直是史学的传统研究领域。近年来,随着《严复变译思想考》等新著的出版,严复翻译思想的内涵、严复翻译思想与其思想体系的关系等问题,再度引起了学界的关注。

  福建师范大学教授汪征鲁表示,严复翻译思想的核心是他在《〈天演论〉译例言》中提出的信、达、雅三原则。信,即译文要符合原著内容;达,即在原著母语内容的基础上,用第二种语言将文意达旨、通顺地表达出来;雅,即文字要规范、优雅。这一原则貌似简单,但要实践操作并非易事。汪征鲁表示,信、达、雅原则,直到今天仍为大部分翻译工作者、翻译理论家所遵循与首肯,这足以印证严复当年的真知灼见。

  在新的历史条件下,研究者应该把严复思想放在中国近代思潮演化的坐标上、置于中国传统社会现代化转型的历史实践中加以考察,并与同时代的其他思想家进行比较,从而准确认识其历史地位。

  薛菁表示,严复思想的精要表现为,以自然科学为本的思想,以进化论为核心的历史观,以数理逻辑为核心的方法论,以自由为体,民主为用的核心价值体系,以三民论为核心的救国方略。这些思想主张构成了中国传统社会的现代化转型思想理论基础的重要组成部分,而这些思想的社会实践即为后来发生的五四运动、新文化运动等。五四运动倡导的科学、民主,与严复提倡的科学、民主,是一脉相承、同质同源的。直至今日,严复的这些思想仍深具现代价值。

  作为与严复齐名的启蒙思想家,梁启超在中国近代社会思潮演变中同样影响巨大,比较二者有助于加深对中国近代思想家以及社会思潮发展规律的认识。汪征鲁表示,二人毕生虽都致力于中西文化的融合与发展,但所走学术文化道路有所不同。严复进入西学的路径是英文、自然科学,一开始就主张学习西学的体、用;梁启超进入西学的路径是中文、今文经学和西方人文学科,一开始主张的是中学为主,西学为辅。然而二人殊途同归,均主张中学基础上的中西文化的全面交流与融合。他们的思想变化,分别呈现出了一个动态演进过程,其对待中西学术文化的态度也存在明显不同。
